To All My Gossett Cousins...
I have been researching my branch of the Gossett family since the early 1980s. Back in 1999 I started hearing about the "Newcomer" book. I had seen copies of some of the chapters and found a wonderful amount of information. I tried to get a copy of the book but had little luck. I was finally able to obtain a copy of The Family of Gossett through the interlibrary loan program at my local library. Because I found this book so difficult to obtain, and so valuable to Gossett genealogy, I took on the arduous task of scanning the entire book for publication on the Internet.

I originally published it at GeoCities on my Descendants of Milton Gossett web site. I haven't been able to access or make changes to that site for several years. I continue to get e-mail about The Family of Gossett so, I am once again publishing on the web at an address I hope remains open for many years. But, back to The Family of Gossett....
Published in 1954 by Evangeline Gossett Newcomer, the book is not easy to identify or locate because it does not have an ISBN number or a Library of Congress number. Copyright information is not listed.
I hope that Mrs. Newcomer would agree with my intent to make her work available free of charge to those interested in Gossett genealogy. Therefore, no portion of this book may be downloaded, copied or reproduced in any manner or form for commercial purposes and may not be sold or offered for sale. You may not charge for access to this book, if made available on the Internet, nor make it part of an on-line library that charges for access. Copies may be made for personal, non-commercial use only, to further the knowledge of our Gossett ancestors amongst our many cousins. Please give all credit to Mrs. Newcomer. Her work has become invaluable to Gossett researchers.
The text within this book was scanned through computerized optical character recognition. It is unchanged from the original manuscript, with a few exceptions:
- Special care was given to ensure that names and dates were correctly digitized.
- Minor corrections in spelling, punctuation and capitalization were made where there would be no impact in doing so. Some names appear to be misspelled but were not changed because they match the original manuscript.
- Any reference made to illustrations at the end of the book no longer apply. Illustrations are now located in the appropriate place within the text.
- Where information has proved to be wrong or misleading, changes were made within the original text immediately following the incorrect information and are included within brackets ([ ]).
- Some information was added to clarify issue and appears as gray text.
- Some formatting of text and paragraphs was changed to ease in reading.
The advantage of the Internet allows Gossett researchers all over the world to add to, comment on or correct information within The Family of Gossett. This information is added in red text, again within brackets, and/or is linked to another page on this web site and is not part of the original work. I believe Mrs. Newcomer would approve of the additions to her book. I would love to add photos of the people who appear in this work as well as links to more information about these families.
I have a copy of The Family of Gossett and am happy to look up information if something on this site appears to be wrong or needs clarification. I do not have any additional information about the people that appear in Mrs. Newcomer's book, with the exception of my own direct ancestor Milton, one of the lesser-known sons of "John Gossett of Ohio".
The Family of Gossett originally appeared on my site at GeoCities and you may still be able to access this at that address. As stated above I have not been able to update that site for many years. If there appears to be conflicts between what is here and what is at the GeoCities site, the information at this site is correct. I am, once again, able to make changes so should you find problems please E-mail me so that they may be corrected.
Ancestry.com now has The Family of Gossett available on their site with digital images of each page. The good news is now you can see the book as it was originally published. The bad news is Ancestry charges a subscription fee to view their holdings. But back to the good news: a free 14-day trial is available. Click Here to view the book at Ancestry.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have!
